If you have a storage unit that you use throughout the year to store your goods, with summer just around the corner, now is a great time to reorganize your storage unit and rotate out seasonal items. Here are a few tips for reorganizing your storage unit this summer.

#1 Start By Cleaning Everything Up

The first thing you need to do is start by cleaning your storage unit. Start by sweeping the floor and removing any dust that has accumulated inside of your unit. Next, dust all of your boxes and inspect them as you do so. Make sure that none of the boxes have become opened or compromised.

If you have any furniture stored in your unit, remove the covers on your furniture and wash the covers. Set your furniture outside for a little while and let them air out; sometimes furniture can start to smell stale after being left inside of a storage unit for an extended period of time.

#2 Remove Unnecessary Clutter

The second thing you need to do is to remove unnecessary clutter from your storage unit. Just like your home, over time your storage unit can get cluttered with items you don't really need to keep around. Go through the boxes in your storage unit, and pull out the ones that you have not opened up and used for a year or two. If these items don't have any sentimental value, donate them or throw them away.

Even though your storage unit is a place where you can put extra goods, you still have to pay for the space, which is why it is a good idea to go through it at least once a year.

#3 Remove Summer Items

The third thing you need to do is remove all the items you keep in your storage that you will need access to this summer. This is a good time to pull out all the landscaping and lawn equipment that you will need to use this summer. It is also a good time to pull out summer toys and accessories, such as pool tools, bikes and summer lawn games. Get everything out that you will want to use and enjoy during the summer months.

#4 Add Items You Don't Need During The Summer

After you pull out the necessary items you'll need this summer, it is time to add the items you will not need to use during the summer months. If you still have any seasonal decorations lying around your house from the winter or spring holiday season, put them in clearly labeled plastic containers and move them into your storage unit.

If you have a child who is attending college, have them put all of their "extra" bedroom belongings into your storage unit. You may want them to label all their belongings with their name as well as what is inside of the container to make moving back to school easier.
